End of Night

Dear friends
My friend Ranjit sent me the following story on a post card. I cannot think of a better story for this week. Hence I send it to you. Here it is:

End of Night

A rabbi gathered his students and asked them: How do we know the exact moment when night ends and day begins?

One boy said: When it is light to tell a sheep from a dog.

Another said: When it is light enough to tell an olive from a fig tree.

No, these are not good definitions, said the Rabbi.

What then is the right answer? Asked the boys.

And the Rabbi said: When a stranger approaches and we think he is our brother, and all conflicts disappear, that is the moment when night ends and day begins.
